An Experiment in Silence

Hello friends!

It’s been a while, I know. 365 days since my last post on this blog. The break didn’t start out as intentional, but as weeks and then months passed, I decided to take some time away to contemplate my purpose for blogging, and my intended outcome.

Have you noticed how much noise there is on the internet? There are millions of voices, speaking on hundreds of thousands of subjects of every variety and sort. It is a bit overwhelming, to be honest, and I found myself feeling the weight of my smallness as I feebly added my own voice to the void. Was I writing about things that mattered? Was I writing my own opinions, or was I writing truth? Was my voice adding anything of substance, or was it just more noise?

As I sat in the “silence” of not writing, just observing others on the internet, I realized that like I was prone to do, many of them speak or write without thinking, sharing their opinions without taking the time to seek out fact and reason to make their argument persuasive. The problem is that for every opinion, there are hundreds of people who will accept that opinion also without thinking about it, without researching or looking for truth.

In this community of humanity that lives much of our lives on the internet, I have become more convinced then ever before that believers in Christ have a responsibility to be voices of truth in the midst of darkness and lies. I want this blog to be a place of truth-speaking, of sharing things that matter, of giving hope, peace, and joy. I want to write in such a way that no longer just adds to the noise, but is a quiet whisper of truth and meaning that will help others know Jesus and understand our world.

So, this year, I am committed to writing differently than I have before. I would love for you to join me, and add your own voice to the conversation! Welcome to 2015!

Thankful Thursday: October 13th

We have now entered warp speed. I am going to wake up and it will be February. Not even joking.

However, in the meantime, as the days rush past with frightening speed, I will hopefully remember on Thursdays to be thankful on here. 🙂

Thankful today for….

1. Being challenged out of complacency when it comes to my faith. Being asked tough questions and dialoguing in such a way that it takes me back to the Word to find the answers, not just what I learned in sunday school or from culture or my family or Campus Crusade for Christ.

2. The cross.

3. Rain! I love rain. I love the freshness it brings, the smell it leaves behind, the sound of it against window panes and roofs, everything.

4. Only 51 more days!!!!!

5. The breadth of the gospel and the infinite means God uses to bring it to places and people in darkness. I had dinner tonight with a group from my church, and heard from one of our missionaries serving in Southeast Asia. It was such a joy to hear about what the Lord is doing in that part of the world!

6. My church – love those people!

7. The Word. We are so spoiled here in the states, and in much of the first world. We have no idea what a treasure we have – it is nothing for us to pick up a Bible in our own language and read it. I am thankful for the reminder that there are still people in the world who have no access as of yet to scripture in their native tongue, and that this Word is something to be treasured as a rare pearl.

8. My journal collection. Although not always a pretty story, I am thankful that I began journaling years ago, and can look back and see just how far the Lord has brought me. It is easy at times to forget who I used to be, and all that He has done in my life to this point.

9. Provision. I am in the process of asking a few new families to join my ministry team, which is one of my favorite parts of my job! The Lord is so faithful in providing for each of my needs, and I love getting to partner together with people in declaring Christ crucified, risen and reigning to the nations.

Thankful Thursday: August 25th

4 things I am thankful for today:

1. God’s glory on display. We had a magnificent and extreme storm blow through last night. My bedroom looked like a dance club with a massive strobe light. The lightening was flashing literally every 2-3 seconds and took my breath away (though thankfully not permanently). Whenever storms like that happen I just imagine God up on His throne with a conductors wand waving gracefully through the air as He tells the winds, thunder and lightening where to go to best display His glory to His creations below.

2. The cup warmer sitting on my desk at work. Made a cup of tea this morning around 10, and it’s still piping hot 4.5 hours later. It’s the little things in life. 🙂

3. Friends who sew! My friend Kristin is graciously hemming two skirts for me that have been needing a little trim for years, and then she is also going to make me a new fun bag! I’ll post some pictures when it is done.

4. Building community. Our office picnic is tonight, and I love whenever we gather together as a whole office, including families. It is so fun to connect with the wives of the men I work with and get to know their kids. It’s such a great way to start off the year building community with one another. I’m finding that Cru is much like the military in that there are almost constant transitions. People come and go in the office at such a rate that the dynamics and faces change on a yearly basis. Although recently it seems like we are adding more faces than are leaving (a good thing), but the downside is we are quickly outgrowing our office space!
